Teddy Sheringham has backed Michael Carrick to handle the pressure of managing Manchester United, pointing to his years as a player at the club.
Michael Carrick knows better than most what comes with being part of Manchester United. He spent years dealing with the expectations that surround the club and now faces those demands from the touchline.
Teddy Sheringham believes that experience could prove useful as Carrick deals with the scrutiny that comes with the job.
“Anyone within Man United who has been involved with Man United knows the pressue of what it’s like to play for Man United. Everywhere you go, people want to beat you. And Michael knows that, he’s been a player.”

The former United striker also joked about how quickly the demands of management can take their toll.
“It’ll be interesting how long his hair stays nice and dark and flowing on the touchline. That pressure brings the grey hair or the baldness at some stage for these managers and all of sudden you look and go, blimey. He’s got old, and that’s what that pressure does,” Teddy Sheringham said.
There is a serious point behind the joke. Managing United brings a level of attention that few jobs in football can match, and Sheringham knows exactly what that environment is like.
He also made it clear that he likes what he has seen from Carrick so far.
“Being involved in football in general, but Man United even more so. But Michael knows that. I love his character. I wish him well and I think he will come good.”
