Teddy Sheringham believes Benjamin Sesko can become a major player for Manchester United this season and feels the striker should be given more chances from the start.
Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal of the campaign on Sunday, coming off the bench to put United 2-1 ahead against Everton. It looked like the winning goal before Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck late to make it 2-2.
The Slovenia international has started all three Premier League games on the bench so far, but Teddy Sheringham thinks that needs to change.
Sheringham explains why Benjamin Sesko can thrive
“I really like Benjamin Sesko as a player, he has everything to be a top centre forward,” Sheringham said as quoted by Metro UK.
The former United striker was particularly impressed by the range of qualities Sesko brings to the position.
“He holds the ball up, lays it off nicely, and can score with his head or either foot. He knows where the goal is and gets himself into the six-yard box, he’s a fantastic player.”
For Sheringham, Sesko is not simply another option in attack. The striker changes how Manchester United can play by giving the players behind him a clear focal point.
“Having him in the team changes the format of the way Manchester United play, he provides that focal point every team needs.”
Sheringham also believes Sesko can make life easier for United’s midfielders.
“Midfield players enjoy playing with someone who gives them something to build off, especially when he can also score goals. He will have a huge impact this season.”
Sesko’s first season at United ended with 12 goals, despite taking time to find his rhythm before putting together a strong spell mid-campaign and later suffering an injury.
Sheringham clearly sees much more to come and believes regular opportunities could bring out the best in the 23-year-old.
