Teddy Sheringham isn’t convinced Manchester United will immediately get the best out of Carlos Baleba when the midfielder finally makes his debut.
Manchester United signed Baleba from Brighton for £70 million last month, but an ankle injury has delayed his first appearance for the club. With the midfielder still waiting to get on the pitch, Teddy Sheringham believes it could take some time before anyone can properly judge how he will cope with the pressure at Old Trafford.
“I’m not sold on Carlos Baleba, we’ve not seen him play at a club with the pressure of Man United yet so it’ll take six months or so before we can get a real idea,” Sheringham said as quoted by Metro UK.
Carlos Baleba faces competition from Mainoo
Sheringham also pointed to the competition Baleba will face once he is fit.
“When you bring in two or three signings, you know they’re expected to be playing.”
Youri Tielemans is already an example of that. The midfielder arrived with a strong reputation and has gone straight into the team.
“With someone like [Youri] Tielemans, everyone talks highly of him and you expect him to go straight into the side, which has been the case.”
Baleba’s situation could be different, especially with Kobbie Mainoo now back in the midfield picture.
“So, someone like Baleba, with Kobbie Mainoo playing might have to bide his time.”
That means Carlos Baleba may have to wait for his opportunity rather than walking straight into Carrick’s starting XI. When it eventually comes, Sheringham believes the £70m signing has to make the most of it.
“When that chance does come, they’ve got to grab it with both hands.”
