Bruno Fernandes has officially been nominated for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after producing arguably the finest season of his Manchester United career.
The United captain has spent much of the year collecting individual recognition after becoming the driving force behind Michael Carrick’s side.
Fernandes helped drag United back into the Champions League with a third-place Premier League finish, but it was the manner of his influence that made the campaign so remarkable.
He finished the league season with a record-breaking 21 assists, moving beyond the previous single-season benchmark of 20 shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
His final assist, for Patrick Dorgu against Brighton, completed a campaign in which United’s captain consistently created chances regardless of the game state or opposition.
Fernandes also scored nine Premier League goals and was central to almost everything dangerous United produced.
That form saw him named the 2025/26 PFA Players’ Player of the Year, an award voted for by his fellow professionals.
He was also crowned Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, underlining just how widely his performances were recognised.

The Ballon d’Or has now officially confirmed Fernandes among the nominees for the men’s award in 2026.
The shortlist contains 30 players who will compete for one of football’s most prestigious individual honours.
Fernandes’ inclusion feels like the natural continuation of a year in which he moved beyond simply being United’s most important player and into the conversation surrounding Europe’s elite performers.
His creativity remained his defining weapon.
However, last season also showed the maturity of a captain capable of controlling matches, demanding standards and repeatedly producing when United needed him most.
The Portuguese midfielder will now hope to follow an exclusive line of former United players who have lifted the Ballon d’Or, including Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 2026 winner will be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26.
For Fernandes, however, simply making the final shortlist is another major recognition of an extraordinary year at Old Trafford.
