Manchester United have endured a sluggish opening to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, picking up just four points from three fixtures despite a busy summer of squad rebuilding. With results yet to click into gear, the Old Trafford hierarchy are already looking ahead to January, and Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha has emerged as a fresh midfield target.
Why United Are Circling Nmecha
According to German outlet FussballDaten, United have opened dialogue with Dortmund over a possible deal for the 25-year-old, though the Bundesliga club are said to be holding out for a fee in the region of £85 million. Nmecha, who came through Manchester City’s academy before moving to Wolfsburg and then Dortmund in 2023, has developed into one of Niko Kovac’s most trusted midfielders and impressed further with Germany at the World Cup. He signed a contract extension at Signal Iduna Park until 2030 back in March, which hands Dortmund considerable leverage in any negotiation. United are reportedly not alone in this chase, with Manchester City and Newcastle United also credited with an interest.
A Deal That May Not Be Necessary Just Yet
Given Manuel Ugarte’s fitness troubles and Youri Tielemans’ mixed defensive form since joining from Aston Villa, it’s easy to see why Nmecha appeals. He’s a genuine ball-carrying, press-resistant midfielder worth building around long-term. Even so, committing £85 million in January feels premature. United already have Kobbie Mainoo, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos on the books, and Michael Carrick has the tactical flexibility to shuffle away from a double pivot if physicality becomes an issue. My own view is that United’s money would be better spent strengthening at full-back, where both flanks look short on quality, rather than stacking further resources into an already competitive midfield unit.
