Lewis Hall’s solid performance against Millwall in the Carabao Cup showed Manchester United what they are missing at left-back.
The third round of the Carabao Cup is underway, but Manchester United must wait until next Wednesday because they are competing in the Champions League.
Michael Carrick’s side were drawn at home against Brighton for an all-Premier League tie. The Reds are currently trying to pick themselves up from a slow start to the 2026/27 campaign after losing to Hull City and drawing with Everton.
One club that has booked its place in the next round of the Carabao Cup is Newcastle, with United-linked Lewis Hall impressing at left-back.

Lewis Hall causes problems for Millwall
The biggest weak spot in United’s team right now is the defence, with growing concerns over Luke Shaw’s form and lack of cover.
That is why United wanted to sign Hall from Newcastle in the summer.
With Hall signing new terms at Newcastle, it remains a tricky task – financially – for United to lure the 22-year-old away from St. James’ Park.
Hall’s performance against Millwall on Tuesday night showed exactly why United listed the young England international as a priority target.
It was another bright display from Hall as he caused Millwall problems down the left flank in both halves, delivered an assist for Joe Willock’s winner, and put in a solid defensive performance, as seen in the five recoveries he made as well as two clearances.
Lewis had more touches of the ball (85) than any other player on the pitch, and the same can be said for chances created (4). He also boasted a 94% pass success rate.
It would make a huge difference to United’s team if Carrick had a left flank flying up and down the wing like Hall, who is as strong going forward as he is defensively.

When is Lewis Hall scheduled to play Man Utd next?
Unless United beat Brighton and draw Newcastle in the Carabao Cup fourth round, Hall will have to wait until the start of December for his next audition against the Reds.
Newcastle will travel to Old Trafford a month later, which means Carrick will get a chance to watch Hall up close twice in the space of a month.
It remains to be seen if Hall’s new contract at Newcastle will act as a push factor for United or if they still plan to make a move next year. Only time will tell.
