Michael Carrick’s remit of being “anyone but Ruben Amorim” wrote another chapter as he continues to repair the damage to Man Utd.
The stakes are higher this season as Michael Carrick needs to show he’s more than just “anyone but Ruben Amorim” for Man Utd.
The start to the season hasn’t been good, but he owes backing, especially from people who backed Amorim’s United, which was going nowhere.
More than the results, however, the worrying part was the unforgivable damage he was doing to the club, which Carrick continues to repair.

Watching people criticise Carrick for United dropping a point away at Everton is ironic because he’s become a victim of his own success.
Under Amorim, getting consecutive wins in the league was seen as a milestone, and even he talked like this club was up to no good.
Carrick made a mockery of that claim as soon as he arrived, and he continues to restore the collapsed standards at Old Trafford.
Ahead of United’s return to the UCL, which was powered by Carrick’s appointment, he continued this mission.
He said: “This football club has been used to challenging with the best and being the best and it’s not something we take for granted. We’ve missed out on it for a number of years so it means a lot, it’s where we expect to be. We’ve made huge steps over the past few months to be in this position.
“We’re capable of some really big things, we can go up against anyone and come out on top.”
This is in stark contrast to promises of suffering and a long-term project by Amorim, something that never looked close to materialising.
People who talk about “that win” under Amorim conveniently forget that they remember wins under him because they were so rare.
Carrick has restored the standards so much that a single dropped point creates uproar now.
That is a hit Carrick is willing to take, because that means his mission to repair Amorim’s unforgivable damage to this great institution is proving to be a success.
After 14 months of suffering, United are back in the “expected to win every game” school of thought, and Carrick is not shirking away from that responsibility.
Nobody misses the suffering and project talk with any positive results to back it up.
