Why Luke Shaw missed Manchester United training ahead of UCL clash vs Sabah

Luke Shaw was not part of Manchester United’s training session on Wednesday ahead of their Champions League opener against Sabah FK.

The 31-year-old’s absence sparked concern among supporters given the Red Devils’ lack of options at left-back.

However, the Manchester Evening News report the defender’s omission is not due to a new injury problem.

He was simply taking a designated rest day as the club wanted him to recover after starting the first three Premier League matches.

United spent most of their transfer budget on midfield, signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba.

They were also expected to add a new left-back this summer.

Tyrell Malacia left at the end of last season, and Shaw has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

The club were linked with Lewis Hall, Alejandro Balde and Jorge Salinas, but they did not make a concrete move for any of the three.

Hall has recently agreed to sign a new long-term contract with Newcastle United.

Harry Amass was not allowed to leave United on loan, and manager Michael Carrick could use the youngster for the cup matches.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can play at left-back, though neither are specialists in this position.

Patrick Dorgu was initially signed to provide competition for Shaw at left-back, but Carrick now trusts him more in an attacking role.
