Manchester United’s first-team was in open training on Wednesday ahead of the Champions League kick-off against Sabah with Jim Thwaites’ addition proving a point.
Michael Carrick kept a pretty small group for Manchester United during training ahead of the Sabah clash with some interesting changes to the group.
Firstly, Luke Shaw took a rest day and will likely miss the fixture altogether as a way of managing his load and keeping him fit.
While Jim Thwaites was an exciting addition to the group, joining Harry Amass and Shea Lacey as the only ‘academy’ players involved in the session.

Jim Thwaites is overtaking the Fletcher twins in the eyes of Michael Carrick
Thwaites’ involvement is far from a surprise considering he is one of, if not the finest midfield talent at the club right now.
Additionally, Carrick is a big fan of Thwaites with the 18-year-old technically so gifted which sets him apart from the rest.
Thwaites could realistically make the jump up into the first-team at some stage this season, maybe even against Sabah if Carrick goes all in on rotations.
But his involvement in the first-team group ahead of a match-day like this does showcase how highly Carrick views him and the fact he is ahead of both Tyler and Jack Fletcher in the midfield ranks right now.
Thwaites is the more talented midfielder, but he is also a year younger, which makes it even more impressive that Carrick is so swayed that he’s the one getting this opportunity.
However, it also continues to show that the Fletcher twins are in a weird place right now for United, not viable senior options but also too good for the U21s.
It makes the decision not to loan them out in the summer look ridiculous.
Thwaites needs to get chances this season at Manchester United
This season needs to see Thwaites handed opportunities to prove how good he is, because he is ready to play a part for United right now without a doubt.
On the ball, he is already a Premier League level midfielder and while there are areas to solve in terms of his physicality, Thwaites absolutely is good enough to be playing 10-15 minutes against Sabah of all teams.
It is reason enough to be excited about Thwaites that Bruno Fernandes quite clearly endorses him, consistently seen with him in training and around Carrington, but having watched the youngster for two years, he is a special footballer and Carrick has seen this.
Whether it is in the 10, as an eight or a tempo setting six, Thwaites can or will be able to do it all during his career at some stage. The sooner Carrick throws him into the team, the better.
Assuming this group in training is the squad to face Sabah, don’t rule out a Thwaites debut as soon as this week. If not, be certain that it is coming.
