On this day, the British television landscape saw its first attempt to offer regular live League football. ITV broadcast the Saturday evening fixture between Blackpool and Bolton. These two clubs had previously contested a famous Cup Final in 1953, but by 1960, both were struggling in the First Division. The match was notably missing its star player, Stanley Matthews, due to injury. The game itself was lacklustre, and the TV ratings were poor. The following Saturday, Arsenal refused permission for their match against Newcastle to be televised, and Spurs did the same the week after for their match against Aston Villa. Consequently, ITV abandoned the project, and it would be nearly a quarter of a century before another live League match was broadcast on British TV, with Tottenham facing Nottingham Forest on 2nd October 1983.

The channel was introduced with the slogan “Get MUTV, get closer to Manchester United” and was available for a monthly subscription of £4.99. It promised to bring everything related to Manchester United to fans worldwide. Initially, MUTV was jointly owned by Manchester United, ITV, and BSkyB. As the channel established itself, it became wholly owned by the club, marking another significant income stream for Manchester United.
