Marcus Rashford has been backed to become a regular starter on the left wing for Manchester United this season. Michael Carrick handed Rashford a second start since his reintegration against Everton last weekend.
The 28-year-old had the beating of Everton defender Merlin Rohl throughout the game, and United did not look as dangerous when he was replaced by Patrick Dorgu with 20 minutes remaining.
Dorgu's performances on the left wing were promising last season. He started the opening game of the campaign against Hull, but Rashford replaced him at half-time in that game, and has since been given starts against Ipswich Town and Everton.
In Monday's edition of the Manchester is Red podcast, the Manchester Evening News' Steven Railston and Tyrone Marshall discussed Rashford's performance at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
"We'll speak about some positives from the match," Railston said. "Marcus Rashford had a really good game, didn't he? And it's interesting now, obviously three matches back, he came on for the second half against Hull when I was there two weeks ago, obviously he started against Ipswich, started again.
"He's been reintegrated and he's wearing the number nine shirt, and there were positive signs. Look, there were some questions around why he was substituted, as we said, but when Carrick spoke in the press conference, it became clear.
"And I think when you look at, he was looking a little bit tired. Someone had spotted him asking for an energy drink. So perhaps his energy levels were understandably dropping, as he's not started many games. But it was a positive sign to see Rashford looking good and dangerous on a football pitch."
Marshall replied: "Yeah, I think so, and we spoke about Dorgu a lot during the summer, but we always had to remember that his performances on the left wing were a very small sample size.
"I think he started three games on the left wing for Carrick last season, then started against Hull and didn't make much of an impact, and you can just see Rashford is a level above. And I thought he was really good.
"We discussed endlessly the rights and wrongs of bringing him back this summer and the wage payoff that you've now got on the wage bill with him, but you look at that performance, and if you were trying to sign a left-winger in this market that could offer you that, you'd be looking at £70 million-plus at the very least.
"United have got him for nothing because he's always been there. And he does seem switched on, he seems committed to the cause at the moment. I thought his tracking back against Ipswich was very noticeable, really. And yeah, a really good performance.
"That partnership with Shaw has really clicked again straight away, like it's not taken them long to get going at all. There was one really good moment in the first half early on in the game where Rashford hugged the touchline a lot and created that space by staying wide on the touchline, and Shaw underlapped and it was a really good ball from Rashford to find him.
"But I thought the clever thing that Shaw did after that was he kind of left Rashford alone for quite a while, because it quickly became apparent Rashford had the beating of Merlin Rohl.
"And what he didn't need was an overlapping left-back dragging another defender into the picture, and I thought it was quite clever from Shaw just to kind of spend 20-30 minutes going, 'Yeah, go on then, you don't need me. You get him 1 vs 1'."
