Barcelona sporting director Deco has explained the club’s decision to move for Anthony Gordon instead of signing Marcus Rashford.
Manchester United star Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.
He scored 14 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions, making a strong case for the Blaugrana to make the move permanent.
But they opted against signing him and instead hired his England teammate Gordon for £69 million.
Explaining the club’s decision, Deco said the former Newcastle United star fit manager Hansi Flick’s style more than Rashford.
He told RAC1: “We are extremely grateful to Rashford. He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony.
“His style fits with what the coach is looking for.”
Rashford was expected to leave United this summer, but he ended up staying after the Barcelona move collapsed.
The 28-year-old has made a positive start to the season, featuring in all three Premier League matches.
He is yet to register a goal or assist, but has troubled defenders with his pace and dribbling skills.
United will return to Champions League action on Thursday when they host Azerbaijan side Sabah at Old Trafford.
Rashford is in contention to start on the left wing, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha occupying the other two attacking spots.
Luke Shaw was not part of the training session on Wednesday. Although Carrick confirmed Shaw has no injury issues, the experienced left-back is unlikely to start.
We believe Noussair Mazraoui will slot in on the left, though Harry Amass remains an option.
