Lewis Hall was Manchester United's number one transfer target at left-back this summer but decided to stay with Newcastle, where he will soon sign a new contract

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle has hailed Lewis Hall, with the left-back on the verge of signing a new contract following transfer interest from Manchester United.
Hall was United's number one target in the summer transfer window, with Michael Carrick keen to recruit competition for Luke Shaw. But United ended the summer without strengthening the position after Newcastle made it clear they wouldn't do business at any price.
The Magpies took a firm stance over Hall after selling Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes. And they have gone a step further, with Hall poised to commit his future to Newcastle even further by penning a new deal until June 2031.
"Without speaking about his contract, I can just say that I’m in love with what I’ve seen so far from him," Jaissle said, speaking ahead of Newcastle's Premier League match against Leeds on Monday.
“It's an amazing player with huge potential still, and this makes me so happy to, hopefully, have him here for the next years in the long term. He’s fitting so good to to this identity, how we want to play football, and again, he's doing an excellent job."
The 22-year-old, who joined the club in a £28million move from Chelsea two years ago, has played every minute of Newcastle's games so far this season. He has provided assists in the last two matches, a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in the league and a 1-0 win over Millwall in the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle have also been boosted by the return from injury of Tino Livramento against Millwall. "I'm happy for him that he got now 45 minutes on a high level against a strong opponent in difficult circumstances playing there in Millwall," Jaissle said.

"That makes us proud to see him already on a high level, it's never easy coming back from a long-term injury then performing already mature whilst physically already on a good level.
"I'm also satisfied and happy that he was dealing with the 45 minutes really good, he responded well. It means also our performance department did an excellent job."
United will have to look elsewhere if they are to resume their search for a left-back in the January transfer window. With Shaw the only senior specialist left-back in the squad and Harry Amass seemingly not deemed ready, Carrick will have to use Patrick Dorgu, Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui as a back-up for the time being.
Their need for reinforcements in the position was made clear after Shaw missed Wednesday's training session to manage his workload. They played Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday night at Old Trafford before hosting Manchester City in the derby on Sunday.
