Michael Carrick has confirmed Luke Shaw has not been named in Manchester United's squad for their Champions League return because he "didn't want to take any risks" with the left-back.
Shaw did not take part in Wednesday's training session and was therefore not expected to start Thursday's Champions League opener. However, he has not even been named on the bench for the game against Sabah.
With the Manchester derby just three days away, Carrick was asked by TNT Sports to give an update on Shaw ahead of the game with Sabah. "He came off the other day with a little bit of cramp, so we didn't want to take any risks. We’re trying to manage him so we'll see how he is after this one," Carrick said.
Patrick Dorgu will play at left-back against Sabah. The Denmark international comes into the side along with Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Benjamin Sesko. On the changes he has made to his team, Carrick said: "We wanted to change a little bit and freshen things up a little bit.
"We're trying to get the balance right. Attacking-wise we feel that we're really strong and we feel that we've got a really good team. We've got a good squad, we can change, we just didn't want to change too many becuase it's not easy playing in a team with too many changes.
United have suffered a shaky start to the season, picking up just one win from their opening three games against Hull, Ipswich and Everton. Carrick has been keen to defend his side's displays early on in the season and hopes to see improvements against Sabah.
When asked what he wanted to see from his team tonight, the United boss said: "Just building on what we've done. We've improved a lot of our play from last season. I know we haven't had the results to totally match that up, but I think there are a lot of promising things in our performances.
"Our attacking play has been good, our combination play has been good, creating chances and scoring goals. We don't want to be conceding goals like we have but there have been different types of goals, different reasons, a couple of goals in the top corner the other day, so we want to tighten up at the back but we're on a decent track at the moment."
