Michael Carrick believes Manchester United are fortunate to have Kobbie Mainoo, with the midfielder continuing to impress after another standout performance against Sabah.
Kobbie Mainoo started his first Champions League game on Thursday as United cruised to a 4-0 victory at Old Trafford. The academy graduate lined up alongside summer signing Youri Tielemans and looked increasingly comfortable in a deeper midfield role.
One moment stood out in particular. Kobbie Mainoo picked out Bruno Fernandes with a superb pass in the 23rd minute, showing the range and awareness that have made him such an important part of Carrick’s plans.
The 21-year-old was replaced by Andrey Santos in the 64th minute, with Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City already in view.
Carrick delighted with Kobbie Mainoo
Carrick has been impressed with the way Mainoo has adapted to his role and believes the midfielder is having a bigger influence on matches from a deeper position.
“He’s a fantastic player, Kobbie,” Carrick told TNT Sports. “I think it’s pretty obvious to see, you know, the way he is performing, playing that little bit deeper really and connecting the attacks.”
Carrick also highlighted Mainoo’s ability to help United build their attacks while still influencing the game higher up the pitch.
“[He’s] starting the attacks and having a massive influence on our games.”
There is another side to Kobbie Mainoo that has pleased the United head coach too. Carrick praised his attitude away from the pitch, pointing to the youngster’s desire to keep improving.
“So, he’s a real joy to have. He wants to learn, he wants to improve, he wants to listen. And he expresses himself on the pitch, you know, and it’s great to see.”
