Ferguson once described former Man United midfielder Bobby Charlton as the ‘greatest English player of all time’ while paying a touching tribute to the Red Devils icon following his death in 2023:
Regarded as one of the finest attacking midfielders in the history of football, Charlton spent most of his illustrious professional career at Old Trafford and became a symbol of the Red Devils' success during the 1950s and 60s.
He played an important part in United’s three league titles, FA Cup triumph and European Cup victory in 1968 – the first in the club’s history.

Charlton spent 17 years in total at Old Trafford and became renowned for his attacking instincts, quality passing and ability to strike the ball powerfully from virtually anywhere on the pitch.
He was also regarded as a genuine gentleman of the game, having received just two cautions throughout his career – one in a league fixture against Chelsea and another while representing England on international duty.

Charlton was part of the Three Lions team that lifted the 1966 World Cup and played a crucial role in their success, scoring twice during the semi-final victory over Portugal.
He is also one of only nine players in history to have won the Ballon d’Or, World Cup and European Cup (now known as the Champions League), alongside players including Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane and Gerd Muller.
