Lisandro Martinez believes Manchester United defender Leny Yoro is the "future" of the club.
Yoro was handed his first start of the season against Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday night. The Frenchman started alongside Martinez at centre-back, and the pair helped to record a clean sheet.
Michael Carrick preferred Ayden Heaven to Yoro on the opening day of the campaign against Hull, and Martinez was brought into the team to partner Harry Maguire against Ipswich Town and Everton.
Yoro took his chance against Sabah with both hands, impressing Martinez with his display. "Amazing performance from Leny Yoro," the Argentina international told reporters after the final whistle.
"He played so well defensively, with the ball, being calm, being composed in every situation, one-vs-one. He's the future of this club, honestly. And we have to help him, you know."
Yoro began last season as one of the first-choice centre-backs under Ruben Amorim, but he lost his place in the autumn and ended the campaign having made 18 starts in the Premier League.
Carrick is expected to select Martinez and Maguire in the Manchester derby this weekend, although United have conceded two goals in each of their Premier League games so far this term.
When Martinez was asked what he attributed the team's defensive struggles to, he said. "I think against Everton, I think we played to take the clean sheet, you know, and then we conceded the goals, you know, and that's what annoys us, you know.
"It's really bad, for sure, because we want to be there, you know, and if we want to compete, we have to keep the clean sheet because it's very important. But today we did it, you know, and we have to build on that."
