Manchester United - Man Utd
Manchester United have made a surprise call on David Alaba. The former Real Madrid defender is still without a club after leaving Spain, but reports say that Man United do not plan to make a move as per the latest transfer news.
Man United turn away from David Alaba
As reported by Football365, Manchester United have ruled out signing Alaba as a free agent. The Austrian left Real Madrid when his contract ended in June. He remains a well-known defender still available after the summer window. The decision surprises because the Reds have a clear need at left-back. Luke Shaw is their only natural option in that role, while others can cover when needed.
Alaba was among the experienced free agents who could have offered cover. Dani Carvajal was another name linked with a possible move. Yet the club have decided not to follow that path. The reason is clear, United’s recruitment plan has changed. The club now want younger players who can grow and hold value for years.
David Alaba’s stats for club and country for the 2025/26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Defensive Contribution Interceptions Blocked Shots
La Liga 11 28 5 12
Copa Del Rey 1 NA NA NA
Champions League 3 7 4 1
FIFA World Cup 4 17 4 3
Age and fitness raise doubts
Alaba is 34 and the Red Devils have stepped away from the idea of bringing him to Old Trafford. His age is seen as a major reason. The club are also looking at his recent lack of regular football. The defender had a long and successful spell in Madrid after leaving Bayern Munich. He won major trophies and could play at left-back, centre-back and in midfield. That range would have made him useful for Michael Carrick.
However, recent seasons have been difficult. Alaba suffered a serious ACL injury in December 2023. He later returned, but his club minutes remained limited. His fitness record is another concern for United, who do not want another short-term problem. Alaba did show his fitness at international level. Even so, his recent club record has made the move a risk.

One door could still open for David Alaba
There is one condition that could change the current stance. If Shaw suffers a serious injury and United are left without a natural left-back, the club may have to review the free-agent market. That does not mean Alaba would become the first choice. Man United could still look at another player, use an existing squad option, or wait until January. A long-term left-back signing is more likely next summer.
For now, the decision is clear. The Premier League side would rather trust younger options than spend money on wages for a defender they believe may be past his best. Alaba must now keep looking for a new club. His name still matters. But the market is moving toward younger players.
Author’s Opinion
Alaba would bring skill, calm and huge experience. Still, United’s choice is understandable. A free transfer is never truly free when wages and fitness are considered. Building for the long term may matter more than adding another famous name.
