Former Manchester United man Memphis Depay is facing a possible ban after appearing to make an ‘offensive’ gesture towards opposition fans. The forward currently plays for Brazilian side Corinthians.
On Thursday, the team were in Copa Libertadores quarter-final action against Estudiantes. Depay and Corinthians found themselves behind after just four minutes thanks to Alex Castro’s goal.
They were, however, able to level things up in the 49th minute through Kaio Cesar. It was in the celebrations for that goal that Depay is said to have put his middle finger up to the home crowd while running to celebrate with his teammates.
The crowd reacted with boos and jeers. Depay also claimed to the referee that he had an object thrown towards him.
But it was his gesture that led to Estudiantes filing a complaint. After the game, they said that they have “'filed a complaint with the CONMEBOL disciplinary unit regarding the offensive gestures made by opposing player Memphis Depay, which were undeniably directed towards our stands”.
The second leg of the quarter-final takes place next week, and in response, Corinthians pointed out a rule that should allow their forward to take part in the game. “The deadline for submitting a defence, set by CONMEBOL, is September 17, one day after the Copa Libertadores quarter-final second leg,” they said.

“Therefore, any potential sanction would only be applied after the ruling, which will take place following the presentation of the defence. Respecting the deadline, Corinthians will present this defence to avoid any type of sanction against Memphis Depay.”
While the rules mean that Depay is likely to be able to play the second leg, he could potentially face a ban for other future games if found guilty.
The 32-year-old spent two-and-a-half years with United. In that time, he played 53 times, scoring seven times and providing five assists.

There was uncertainty over his future this summer, with the player hitting out at Corinthians over not being offered a new deal with the club. “Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for two more years,” he wrote on social media.
“This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.
“I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
Depay eventually did sign a new deal with the club, after agreeing to a significant pay cut.
