Mikel Arteta led his Arsenal side to another win to start the season as they secured another 3 points yesterday as they beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light and now sit at the top of the PL table on 12 points with 4 wins from 4 games.
Sunderland under Regis Le Bris are no joke having qualified for the Europa League on the last day of the season with their win over the then totally lost Chelsea. The Black Cats have strengthened this summer responsibly and are a good side having started the season pretty well.
Where do the Gunners sit right now?
Unsurprisingly Arsenal sit at the top of the table with a maximum 12 points and if City do anything but win today in the Manchester Derby then Arsenal will be leading the table by 2 or 3 points depending on how the Citizens fare vs Man Utd.
As we can see the Gunners are undefeated and already have scored 8 goals while conceding only 1 goal and some would say this reminds them of the way the “Invincibles” started their 2003-4 season which was the legendary season.
Who were the key “Invincibles”?
Well the names that immediately come to mind are Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires plus keeper Jens Lehmann to name just a few. When you look at the then manager le Boss – Arsene Wenger – he was just as confident and unflappable as Mikel Arteta is today.
Arteta has the likes of Declan Rice, Gabriel, Martin Odegaard, David Raya and Bukayo Saka to rely on and given their growing confidence and the way the club have built not only the starting XI but also the squad overall it’s not hard to imagine that this could be the year Arsenal repeat the feat that Man United and others have never come close to.
What goals do the club have this year?
Well clearly Arteta wants to retain the title as a priority and winning their 1st Champions League after coming so close last season would surely rank high on their wish list.
Both are certainly achievable and while they might also fancy a domestic cup win given the strength of their squad, the goal of going undefeated is probably not one many people at the club have really considered.
However given the form they are in and the longer they go without losing in the League we will start to hear rumblings of the “Invincibles – the reboot” as this team has the kind of depth and talent needed to pull off such a very rare accomplishment.
Let’s see how long they can avoid a loss.
