Gary Neville is a big fan of Matheus Cunha, and the former Manchester United defender has explained exactly what he likes about the Brazilian.
Matheus Cunha will be one of the players United look to in today’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford. The forward arrived from Wolves in 2025 for £62.5 million and has quickly established himself as a key name in Michael Carrick’s XI.
Neville was speaking about Cunha on The Overlap when he focused less on numbers and more on the player’s attitude.
“I love Cunha. I love Cunha,” Neville said.
For the former United captain, there is something refreshing about the way Matheus Cunha plays. The Brazilian is prepared to take the ball even when there is a good chance it might not work out.
“He has just got balls,” Neville added.

Cunha is not the sort of player who disappears after losing possession. That appears to be a major part of what has caught Neville’s attention.
“He just takes the ball.”
The United forward can lose possession or have it taken away from him, but Gary Neville likes that he doesn’t let those moments affect his next decision.
“He might give it away, he might even get it taken off him quite a lot, but he keeps going.”
That could be particularly useful against Manchester City. United are likely to have moments when they need someone willing to take responsibility and carry the ball rather than simply getting rid of it.
Neville clearly sees that side of Cunha’s game as a positive. The forward is willing to take risks, accept that some attempts will fail and then demand the ball again.
With United preparing for their biggest league fixture of the season so far, Matheus Cunha could be exactly what Carrick wants from one of his main attacking players.
