Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has admitted it was a “great decision” to delay his return from the shin injury he suffered last season.
Sesko picked up a kick during the clash with Liverpool, aggravating an injury that was already troubling him.
He missed the entire pre-season and has only substitute appearances in the three Premier League games this season.
Sesko revealed in a recent interview that he deliberately took more time than usual to recover, ensuring he was fully fit before returning to competitive action.
He said (via The Athletic): “Basically I got a kick last season, but it was also a little bit overload for myself.
“It’s just needed a little bit longer than usual, because if you start too early it might appear again and I think it was a great decision to wait a little longer and now it’s healed, so it’s perfect. It was just to make sure that it doesn’t get worse.
“The more games I’m getting, the more comfortable I feel, the more free I feel in the game.”
Benjamin Sesko could break the striker curse at United
The Red Devils have always been known for having lethal centre-forwards.
Virtually every successful United side has boasted multiple world-class strikers capable of turning a game on its head.
Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke formed a lethal partnership during the historic 1999 treble-winning season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie also left behind an enduring legacy at Old Trafford.
However, since Van Persie, United have struggled to find a reliable long-term goalscorer capable of consistently leading the attack.
Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo during his second spell and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all delivered important goals, but their arrivals came too late in their careers to provide a long-term solution.
Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig for an initial fee of around £66.3 million last summer.
He managed to score 12 goals across all competitions and finished as the joint-highest goalscorer for United alongside Bryan Mbeumo.
He endured a slow start to the previous campaign but has already bagged two goals this season.
The 23-year-old possesses immense potential and, with the right guidance and a little luck on the injury front, could eventually become the face of the Man United attack.
