Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes following a clash with the Manchester United star in Sunday's derby.
Replays showed the Manchester City midfielder, who has been prolific in this fixture down the years, aimed a kick at Fernandes' stomach after a coming together by the pair near the touchline left the England star on the floor.
And he was promptly given his marching orders by Michael Oliver, leaving Manchester City up against it.
Foden was stunned at the decision, believing the Portugal international caught him with his foot while he was on the floor.
And while Foden hung around as VAR checked the decision, Gary Neville, commentating on the game for Sky Sports, insisted the playmaker could have no complaints.
He said: “Oh dear. He's not having it Foden, VAR will have a look. It looks like Foden reacts. It's a kick into the stomach there, he's not going to get away with that.”
The Premier League Match Centre X account confirmed that Foden had been dismissed for violent conduct, relaying the conversation between Oliver and the VAR officials.

REF: 'Red card Phil Foden – kick out into the body of Bruno'. VAR: 'That looks like a clear red card to me. Looks to be a secondary movement. Confirming the red card for Manchester City No.47'.
