Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford after reacting to a tangle with Bruno Fernandes by kicking the Manchester United captain in the stomach.
Despite playing with 10 men, Manchester City opened the scoring just after the hour mark when Erling Haaland expertly converted Josko Gvardiol's deflected cross at the far post.
Haaland's goal was initially disallowed for offside by the referee, but was subsequently awarded following a lengthy VAR intervention which determined he was played onside by Patrick Dorgu.
Ahead of kick-off, Manchester United supporters gathered near the Bishops Blaize pub to stage a joint protest against both the Glazer family and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The pre-match demonstrations were mounted in response to a season-ticketing fiasco that recently resulted in 685 United supporters receiving stadium bans.
