One of the more surprising transfers of the summer was Nick Woltemade’s loan move to Juventus. This happened after he had clearly fallen behind in the pecking order at [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/09/12/newcastle-united-tipped-to-sign-former-man-utd-player-for-free/).
Usually, you would expect a success story at Newcastle United to end up at a club like Juventus. That is what makes sense on paper. But in this instance, that was clearly not what happened.
On the contrary, it was a struggling Newcastle United player, who was offered an exit route by Juventus and took it. But what was the reasoning behind this?
Why would Juventus consider making a move for Woltemade, who has clearly struggled at Newcastle United? Well, the answer seems to be clear following recent reports in the Italian media.
According to [Tutto Juve](https://www.tuttojuve.com/altre-notizie/longhi-woltemade-giocatore-uscito-radar-campionato-inglese-792673), Enzo Bucchioni told Radio Sportiva:
> Woltemade is a player who has fallen off the radar of the English league and Juve managed to go for such a profile for economic reasons.
So, it looks like ‘economic reasons’ played an important role in Juventus eventually making a move for Woltemade. The German striker was available for a straight loan deal.
As a result, Juventus did not end up making a big financial commitment when it came to bringing Woltemade to Turin. And that worked in his favour.
It was just last summer that Newcastle United spent around £69 million to sign Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart. But after a bright start, with four goals in his first five games for the Magpies, he would lose his form.
By the end of the campaign, Woltemade was not even playing as a striker a lot of the time. Eddie Howe experimented by putting him in a number 10 position.
Obviously, that would not have been the idea when the club spent so heavily to bring him in as the replacement for Alexander Isak. So, it was clearly not working.
If there was any hope that Matthias Jaissle’s appointment would turn around the situation for Woltemade at St James’ Park, that was not on the cards either.
Woltemade did not look like the right fit for Jaissle’s style of football either. One could argue he is not the right fit for the Premier League at all.
So, a stint at Juventus gives Woltemade a chance to bring his career back on track. And for Newcastle United, it is an opportunity for the striker to rebuild his transfer valuation, so that they can recoup as much of the transfer fee as possible
