One of Manchester United’s biggest off-field tasks following the summer transfer window’s closure is securing star player and captain Bruno Fernandes.
The 32-year-old is a legend at Old Trafford. With 332 appearances since signing in 2020, Fernandes has delivered a whopping 111 goals and 106 assists.
His numbers are almighty, and the Portuguese playmaker is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
So far in the 2026/27 season, Fernandes has five goal involvements in as many matches.
After recently being named PFA Players’ Player of the Season, Manchester United are working on tying down the superstar to a new deal, with his current contract set to run out at the end of the campaign.
Well-respected football journalist for The Athletic, David Ornstein, spoke to Sky following Manchester United’s 1-0 derby loss against Manchester City, providing an update on the contract talks to secure Fernandes long-term.
“Bruno Fernandes continues to be in talks with Manchester United over new contract but there is no breakthrough, it’s said an impasse,” Ornstein revealed. “United have the option to extend for another year.”
It means the parties are currently failing to reach an agreement on terms, but it appears the Red Devils’ captain is open to conversations regarding a new deal.
It’s unsurprising, considering the current hot streak of form Fernandes is on. The 32-year-old is in the Ballon d’Or conversation, too, and has been nominated for the 2026 award.
Bruno Fernandes is comfortably Manchester United’s best signing of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
While he is entering the latter stages of his career, as long as Fernandes continues to perform, the longer this brilliant period should continue for the United skipper.
Everybody involved in the club will be hoping a deal is agreed soon, but there is certainly plenty of time to go before things become uncomfortably touch and go.
