Manchester United suffered a disappointing 0-1 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford, with the result made even more frustrating by the fact that their rivals played more than 75 minutes with 10 men.
Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute, giving Manchester United a huge advantage for the remainder of the game. However, they failed to make it count.
Erling Haaland’s controversial winner will dominate the discussion around the match, particularly after VAR overturned the initial offside decision. Still, Manchester United were unable to create enough in front of goal even with City down to ten men.
New summer signing Youri Tielemans refused to get involved in the debate over the VAR decision. Instead, the midfielder admitted that United simply weren’t good enough to claim all three points.

“We shouldn’t have conceded the goal. I don’t think we created enough chances today to win the game. We were sloppy on the ball and lost too many balls and didn’t make the right decisions in the final third.
“Other than the goal they scored, I don’t think they had many chances. It is what it is and we lost the game.”
The defeat leaves United still searching for consistency under Michael Carrick. Youri Tielemans believes that has to change quickly, with the Reds unable to put together two consecutive wins so far.
“We need a calm response but we have got to react anyway. We haven’t won two games in a row yet and we need some momentum and consistency in our team and our results. That is what is going to make us move forward,” the Belgian midfielder added.
United’s next opportunity to respond comes in midweek, when Brighton & Hove Albion visit Old Trafford in the EFL Cup.
