Youri Tielemans believes Manchester United were "sloppy" and did not create enough chances to deserve the win against Manchester City.
City went down to 10 men when Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute of the Manchester derby, but United failed to make the most of their extra man advantage at Old Trafford.
Haaland put the ball in the back of the net on the hour mark. It initially looked like the strike would be disallowed for offside, but Haaland's goal stood after a lengthy VAR review.
The Premier League's official match centre explained that Haaland was in an onside position, and that VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Enzo Fernandez didn’t play the ball.
United had 30 minutes to respond after Haaland's goal, but they ended the game with just three shots on target.
“First of all, we shouldn’t have conceded the goal, but if it doesn’t stand, it’s a different game," Tielemans told NBC Sports.
"I don’t think we created enough chances to win the game anyway. I thought we were a bit sloppy on the ball and maybe didn’t make the right decisions on the final ball.”
When Tielemans was asked about the importance of staying calm after the loss, he said: “Calm response, yeah, but we’ve got to react anyway. We feel like we’ve not won two games in a row yet, so we need a bit of momentum and consistency in our teams and our results."
United have picked up four points from their opening four league games against Hull City, Ipswich Town, Everton and City. The Reds will take on Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday before the September international break.
Speaking in his press conference, Carrick said: "We've got two games coming up this week, and it's part of it of moving on quickly. We haven't got as many points as we would have liked at this point, for sure.
"There's no getting away from that. But we don't need a break or a restart. We've just got to move on and get winning again."
