Manchester United’s all time leading top goalscorer Wayne Rooney paid tribute to one Galway business celebrating being twenty years opened.
The ex-England captain, who scored 253 goals in his time with the Red Devils while winning every trophy possible in the process, enjoyed a night listening to Westlife in the 3Arena alongside former Ireland and United defender John O’Shea.
But Wazza still managed to take time out to say congratulations to Just Kidz Athenry - a local children’s clothes shop which has been in the shopping centre since 2006.
The striker said in a quick video: “I just want to say congratulations to Just Kidz Athenry for being open 20 years. All the best.”
And he wasn’t the only famous person bigging up a local Galway business this weekend.
Tony Audenshaw, better known as long time Emmerdale character and Wolfpack favourite Bob Hope, stopped by Oranmore on Saturday and decided to get on his running shoes and join locals in the weekly 9am Parkrun around Rinville Park.
He has become one of the iconic soap’s most long running characters, featuring in over 3000 episodes across his 26 years so far.
Thankfully Tony’s knees weren’t blown out while running around the steep hills of the park but rather he was blown away instead by the beautiful scenery that surrounded him.
He said: “There may be flatter parkruns, there may be faster parkruns, but you surely won’t find a friendlier parkrun than Oranmore by glorious Galway Bay.
“What’s not to love about the scenic, gently undulating two lap course, run entirely on wide Tarmac pathways in picturesque Renville Park. Toilets without queues; Rocky coastal views; A van for treats and brews, and a castle to peruse.
“Best of all the smiles and support of the merry band of volunteers championed by the infectiously warm Bernie Rogers. Thanks to all for a wonderful morning.”
