Despite a challenging start to their league season, where they failed to secure a win in their first eight matches, Derby County dominated the match against Finn Harps. By half-time, Derby were leading 9-0 and eventually secured a 12-0 victory. Kevin Hector was the standout performer, scoring five goals, while Charlie George and Leighton James each netted three, and Bruce Rioch added another. This victory set a new record for Derby County, surpassing their previous record of two 9-0 league victories from the 19th century. Although Derby won the return leg 4-1, they were later eliminated by AEK Athens in the Second Round, losing 5-2 on aggregate.

Entering the match, van Nistelrooy was tied with Denis Law for the record of most goals scored for Manchester United in European competitions, each having scored 28 goals. Despite Manchester United trailing 2-0 at half-time, van Nistelrooy scored twice in the second half, securing a 2-2 draw and setting a new goalscoring record for the club. Remarkably, van Nistelrooy achieved this milestone in his 33rd European match for United, the same number of matches it took Denis Law to set the previous record. Although van Nistelrooy increased his record to 38 goals in 47 European matches, he, like Law, never won a European competition with Manchester United. This record was eventually surpassed by Wayne Rooney in 2016.
