JJ Gabriel request: 15-year-old academy prodigy JJ Gabriel has stunned Manchester United by submitting a formal request to leave the club and subsequently refusing to train with Michael Carrick's squad. United officials remain completely in the dark regarding the player's reasoning, maintaining that he cannot be de-registered under his current contract.
United's stance: Our colleagues at the Manchester Evening News say that a United source insists Gabriel cannot be de‑registered despite his request. Under current regulations, his registration with the club runs until the end of the season.
Request to become free agent: Gabriel has requested immediate free-agent status, having wiped all traces of United from his social media accounts shortly after scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League. The decision follows growing frustration over his pathway to the first team, including being omitted from United's main 25-man Champions League squad list.
Rival clubs interest: Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich have been linked with the teenager. City made a concerted push to lure Gabriel from Old Trafford in 2025, with director Hugo Viana fronting a charm offensive that highlighted their academy-to-first-team pathway through players like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly but Gabriel ultimately chose to stay at United.
Arsenal: The Gunners have since monitored his rapid rise, pointing to their own track record of fast‑tracking young talent, including Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri, as evidence that 15‑year‑olds can earn genuine first‑team minutes.
Chelsea's academy ban: Chelsea remain focused on recruiting the highest‑ceiling teenage talent globally and are closely monitoring the dispute between Gabriel and United. However, the club's nine‑month academy transfer ban, imposed in March, prevents them from signing the teenager. The sanction covers youth players previously registered with another Premier League or EFL academy, though it does not apply to current academy players, international recruits or those joining on professional terms.
Premier League rules: Despite interest, clubs are legally prohibited from signing players to scholarship agreements until they turn 16 or professional contracts until they turn 17, meaning Gabriel cannot be bound to either until October 6. Premier League rules state that United can challenge or reject Gabriel's request to cancel his registration.
What the rules say: "During your child’s registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the club, player and their parent/carer). If the parties don’t agree, then any person involved can also ask the Premier League to provide a binding decision on a termination request."
