The talk about JJ Gabriel’s prodigious talent has been loud for a long time and everything he has done in Manchester United’s youth ranks has suggested the hype could well be justified. Which is why the news he wants to leave United has caused quite a stir.
For every well-publicised prodigy that actually goes on to enjoy a successful professional career at an elite level, there is a well-publicised prodigy who does not make it at an elite level. Always remember that.
A scarily good 15-year-old does not necessarily turn into a scarily good 25-year-old. Freddy Adu was billed as the next Pele when playing in Major League Soccer at the age of 15. At the age of 25, he was having an unsuccessful trial at Blackpool.
But in the case of Gabriel’s future, it is hard to find anyone with any serious doubt over whether he will make it or not. He is, by common consent, the brightest prospect in the land.
He is an even brighter prospect, some say, than Max Dowman, who made his Premier League debut for Arsenal at 15 years and 235 days old. So, yes, it will be a blow for United if he does walk away, which certainly seems to be his intention.
The competition for marquee youngsters is intense. Rio Ngumoha was one of the most talked-about academy players in the Premier League but left Chelsea for Liverpool around his 16th birthday.
Gabriel turns 16 in three weeks’ time. Youngsters moving between powerhouse clubs is nothing new.

Cesc Fabregas was a jewel of Barcelona’s fabled academy, La Masia, but walked away when he was 16 and joined Arsenal. It happens.
That is not to say Gabriel’s request will not concern United and their fans. This is Manchester United we are talking about. It should be a club that is the ultimate dream for any young player.
But times have changed. For Gabriel’s generation - and probably his family’s generation - United is just another big club. They have not won a Premier League in 13 years and have not won a Champions League in 18 years.
Gabriel might look at Marcus Rashford - a predecessor as a prodigy - and wonder why the England attacker would have preferred to be at Barcelona this season. The reasons behind the decision of Gabriel and his family and his advisers are not yet crystal clear.

There is a suggestion that they thought he should be in United’s Champions League squad, in the same way Dowman was in Arsenal’s at a similar age. Whatever the reasons, they should be respected.
But it should be remembered that the old mantra about no one player being bigger than the club is still true. And especially when that player is not yet 16 years old and especially when that club is Manchester United.
Yes, it will be extremely annoying for United’s coaching staff, executives, and, indeed, fans. But of the issues Michael Carrick and the rest of those in charge of the footballing operation have, it is not a seismic setback.
