Michael Carrick’s managerial tenure at Middlesbrough is now a vital resource for the Manchester United manager to look back on after the Manchester City defeat.
The 45-year-old Manchester United legend enjoyed a euphoric Ole Gunnar Solskjaer-esque run during the 2025-26 Premier League campaign as interim head coach.
However, the honeymoon period is already over for Michael Carrick after he replaced Ruben Amorim as the permanent United manager ahead of this Red Devils season.
Carrick has experienced a mixed set of results in the opening of United’s 2026-27 campaign after one Premier League win, two defeats and a draw so far.

The Carabao Cup is set to begin for Man Utd and Michael Carrick’s knowledge of the competition with Middlesbrough is important
Michael Carrick has seen Manchester United pick up early momentum in other competitions like the Champions League after the 4-0 thrashing of Sabah last week. However, the Red Devils boss must now turn his attention to the Carabao Cup after United’s 1-0 defeat to 10-man Manchester City at the weekend.
The Red Devils were humiliated in the Carabao Cup in the 2025-26 campaign after Ruben Amorim saw United crash out of the competition in the second round at the hands of Grimsby Town. United cannot afford another repeat of an early cup exit in the 2026-27 campaign as they did with last season.
Carrick is feeling the pressure build up in the Old Trafford hot seat and the former Man Utd midfielder must now tap into his experience from his Middlesbrough days.
The United legend oversaw nine matches in the Carabao Cup across his tenure with Middlesbrough and Carrick chalked up seven wins and only two defeats. Carrick had a 77.8 per cent winning record in the Carabao Cup with Middlesbrough and enjoyed high moments during the competition.

Carrick oversaw the Championship side’s stunning run to the semi-finals of the League Cup in the 2023-24 season after winning six of their matches. Unfortunately for the former Middlesbrough boss, Chelsea proved too much to handle in the clash at Stamford Bridge in 2024.
The Blues thrashed Carrick’s former side 6-1 in the second-leg fixture and Chelsea progressed to the final after the 6-2 aggregate scoreline against Middlesbrough.
Carrick was up against higher opposition quality with Chelsea during his Middlesbrough run, but things are now different with the United first-team squad at his disposal.
The United legend faces a tricky test against Premier League side Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. However, Carrick is familiar with the cagey experience of cup competitions and his Middlesbrough experience could be the perfect springboard for him now.
