JJ Gabriel’s future is uncertain after he asked to have his Manchester United scholarship deal terminated.
It feels like one thing after another at Manchester United. From protests against the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe over fan welfare, to losing the Manchester derby on Sunday, and now to a request from one of the academy’s most exciting prospects to leave the club.
JJ Gabriel, 15, has the world at his feet – but to summarise this saga with a song, The Specials’ anthem ‘Too Much Too Young’ certainly feels fitting.
Gabriel’s reasons for wanting a move appear to stem from his dad’s negative influence. That won’t surprise the London-based clubs the youngster previously represented.

Following the news that Gabriel wants his United scholarship terminated, Wayne Rooney shared a subtle update on his Facebook page. The timing led us to think it’s a dig at Gabriel’s dad, Joe O’Cearuill, who multiple sources describe as a nightmare to work with.
Rooney updated his cover photo to show Kai Rooney signing a scholarship deal with United in July. The proud father, standing with his wife, Coleen, beamed for the camera as his son took an important step toward professional football.

Most comments pointed out how proud Wayne looked in the photo, with many references to the drama surrounding Gabriel, caused by his father rather than the youngster himself.
Gabriel was supposed to be in United’s squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash against Brighton. However, the news that broke on Tuesday should spoil that, because this club cannot be held to ransom by any player, especially a 15-year-old.
Having played for United for most of his career, Wayne knows his son, Kai, is at a special club where magical things can happen.
It’s a shame Gabriel’s dad has such a chip on his shoulder. Many were certain he was set for a bright future at United, though there have been concerns about the influences around him.
The potential timing of Gabriel’s exit doesn’t make sense, as it doesn’t serve his development.
Of course, there could be a solution to this mess, but that doesn’t look likely now.
