Manchester United head into their EFL Cup clash with Brighton looking to respond to Sunday’s Manchester derby defeat, but there are still concerns over the squad.
Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland scoring the winner in controversial circumstances. Referee’s body Pro Ref has since admitted that the goal should not have stood.
Even so, City were arguably the better side despite playing with 10 men following Phil Foden’s red card. United now need a much better display against Brighton.
Brighton come into the game in strong form after putting Coventry City to the sword. The Seagulls recovered from an early spell of pressure before eventually securing a 5-0 victory against last season’s Championship winners.
Luke Shaw concern ahead of Brighton clash
Luke Shaw remains one of the main fitness concerns for United. The left-back missed the Champions League meeting with Sabah FK and then sat out the Manchester derby.
Michael Carrick had suggested Shaw’s absence was simply down to managing his minutes, but there are now suggestions that the defender could be dealing with a more serious injury.
Matthijs de Ligt is closer to a return and has resumed training, although he is still expected to miss the EFL Cup tie. Amad and Manuel Ugarte are also unavailable.
New signing Carlos Baleba will not face his former club either, with the midfielder still recovering from an ankle injury.
United could therefore line up with Lammens in goal, behind Dalot, Maguire, Yoro and Amass. Mainoo and Santos are expected in midfield, with Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo and Rashford supporting Sesko in attack.
