What are the Carabao Cup extra-time rules?
Extra-time: Extra time has been eliminated for almost every stage of the Carabao Cup to help reduce player fatigue and match congestion. If a match is level at the conclusion of regulation time, the contest proceeds straight to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
Only exception: The only round in the competition that will see extra-time is the final at Wembley. If the final remains tied after regulation play, the teams will play a standard 30-minute extra-time period before resorting to a penalty shootout if necessary.
VAR usage: The Video Assistant review system is not used in the early rounds of the competition. VAR generally only comes into operation from the semi-finals onwards.
Substitution allowance rules: Managers are permitted to make up to five substitutions per team across three separate stoppage opportunities during regulation time. Teams are also provided an additional concussion substitution if a player suffers a suspected head injury.
Man United tie: United face Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the third round on Wednesday, September 16 (8pm). Michael Carrick's side enter at this stage alongside other Premier League clubs that are involved in European competitions.
Man City tie: City host Norwich City on Thursday, September 17 (7.30pm). City are the holders after beating Arsenal in last year's final under Pep Guardiola.
