Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead at the hands of an inspired Brighton side in a dismal Carabao Cup third round defeat. Shea Lacey opened the scoring with a sumptous strike from range after only eight minutes, before Mason Mount's half-volley doubled United's lead just moments later.
However, it didn't take long for Brighton to gain the upper hand and they deservedly halved the deficit through Charalampos Kostoulas on the stroke of half-time. Pascal Gross equalised in the second half and the Seagulls kept the pressure on, eventually finding a winner through Maxim De Cuyper with 20 minutes remaining. Remarkably, it marked the first time in 50 years that United were beaten at Old Trafford after going two goals up.
Man Utd player ratings vs Brighton
Could've been braver to come out and collect the ball before Kostoulas fired in to halve United's lead. Didn't cover himself in glory for Brighton's third, either. Not his best game by any means.
Shaky against Malick Yalcouye, who mostly had the better of him down United's right-hand side. Pretty anonymous on the ball, too.
Produced a crucial block to deny Brighton a certain goal midway through the first half. Wasn't convincing other than that, playing himself into trouble on a few occasions.
Sloppy in possession and conceded some silly fouls. Had a nightmare for Brighton's first goal, failing to deal with the bouncing ball as he was too busy appealing for offside.
Suffered an injury scare in the first half but was eventually able to continue. Weak defending for Brighton's third, with his deflection essentially serving as an assist.
Got the assist for Lacey's early goal with a clever pass to feet. Helped out in defence, too, bailing out his centre-backs on several occasions.
Invisible in the middle of the park and didn't impact proceedings in the way he would have liked. Outshone by his midfield partner on a bad night for United.

Finished well on the half-volley to double United's lead inside 10 minutes, but didn't have the best of games. Anonymous at times, especially when United were on the back foot, which was the vast majority of the game.
Marked his first senior start for United with a brilliant strike from range after only eight minutes. Looked a threat whenever he was on the ball in the final third.
Worked hard to win the ball in a dangerous area in the build-up to United's second goal. Had plenty of joy down the left but wasn't able to get on the scoresheet himself.
Didn't have much of an impact up to but was starved of service for the most part. Headed the ball straight to Brighton's forwards in the build-up to their second goal.
Substitutes
Introduced with 25 minutes remaining to provide some extra physicality up top, but allowed the game to pass him by.
Didn't offer a great deal in attack with most of the game being played in United's half during his time on the pitch.
Kept things moving in the middle of the park when United had possession, but couldn't do anything to change the result.
Came on just moments after Brighton took the lead in a desperate attempt to turn the tide. Failed to inspire a late equaliser, though.
A late addition.
