Manchester United suffered an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton as they threw away a two-goal lead at Old Trafford.
United made a rapid start to the game. Shea Lacey struck a superb opener after eight minutes for his first goal for the club on the occasion of his first start, and Mason Mount added a second within two minutes.
But they were unable to control the game, and Charalampos Kostoulas took advantage of a Karl Darlow error to pull one back just before the break.
United might well have been fearing the worst already, and when Pascal Gross equalised, it felt like they were in trouble. Substitute Maxim De Cuyper turned the game on its with the third.
This is how the United players rated:
Karl Darlow: Slow off his line to collect a long ball over the top and allowed Kostoulas to score. Had flapped at a corner prior to that and looked very unconvincing. 3
Diogo Dalot: A difficult week for the right-back who was poor on derby day and got run backwards by Malick Yalcouye. Was clearly rattled by the winger's pace. 4
Leny Yoro: Can look like a Rolls-Royce one minute and shaky the next. One dribble up the pitch ended in a tame loss of possession that played his side into trouble. 4
Ayden Heaven: Kostoulas fancied the physical battle against Heaven and he won it hands down. Played him onside for the goal and gave the ball away too easily at times. 3
Noussair Mazraoui: No more convincing than Dorgu at left-back. Took a heavy knock in the first half and was noticeably struggling for a while. Torn apart for the third goal. 3
Andrey Santos: Was in the right position for a couple of interceptions but work in possession was far from convincing. Hasn't built on a positive pre-season. 5
Youri Tielemans: Captain for the night and had a hand in the first goal but spent a lot of the game watching Brighton's players pass it around him. Did produce one lovely shoulder drop in midfield. 5
Shea Lacey: A superb goal and a wonderful moment for the teenager, who started the game very strongly. Capable of carrying the ball up the pitch down the right flank. 7
Mason Mount: Took his goal superbly but did very little after that and offered neither control nor penetration as the No.10. One shot from 70 yards summed up the desperation. 5
Marcus Rashford: Played a big role in the second goal and most notable was his desire to win the ball back high up the pitch. Caused Costinha plenty of problems. 7
Benjamin Sesko: Felt he was fouled in the build-up to the first Brighton goal, but should have been stronger. Could have beaten Steele in a foot race as well. 5
Substitutes
Kobbie Mainoo: Better than the rest in midfield. 6
Bryan Mbeumo: Didn't see much of the ball. 5
Joshua Zirkzee: JJ Gabriel would probably have made more of an impact. 4
Bruno Fernandes: Will never get a night off at this rate. 6
Matheus Cunha: Little time to make an impact. 6
Subs not used: Lammens, Maguire, Amass, T. Fletcher
