Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead at Old Trafford and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton.
Early goals from Shea Lacey and Mason Mount gave Manchester United a dream start at Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
But the Red Devils failed to press their advantage and were picked apart by a Brighton side that grew in confidence.

Karl Darlow – 2
A very, very unconvincing debut from Karl Darlow. Indecisive for Brighton’s first goal, and easily beaten by the next two. Bring back Lammens, please.
Diogo Dalot – 2
Suffered multiple lapses in concentration while defending his back post, and recklessly cleared the ball in the lead-up to Brighton’s second goal.
Ayden Heaven – 2
Made too many sloppy errors at the back and was caught ball-watching for Brighton’s first goal. Still a very raw talent with room for improvement.
Leny Yoro – 3
Part of a leaky defence, and ended with no tackles won in three attempts. Missed a chance to make a vital block just ahead of Brighton’s second goal, but did make a strong headed clearance late on.
Noussair Mazraoui – 4
Didn’t link up well with Marcus Rashford down the left flank and was caught out of position too many times as a makeshift left-back.
Youri Tielemans – 7
Given the captain’s armband by Michael Carrick and stepped up to shoulder the responsibility. Tielemans picked up an assist early on and was an island of composure in an otherwise chaotic side. Every match, Tielemans proves why he was a £35m bargain.
Andrey Santos – 5
Steady if unspectacular. And that’s likely why United signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Defensively impressive, winning all of his ground duels before being replaced.
Mason Mount – 5
Stepped into Bruno Fernandes’ shoes. Mount scored his first goal of the season with a well-taken finish, and he continued to pick up some dangerous positions while also bringing energy to the press.
Shea Lacey – 8
Shea Lacey worked hard to get his first United start, and it came just a day after JJ Gabriel’s requested exit. The 19-year-old took his opportunity with both hands, scoring a wonderful goal early on and working hard throughout.
Marcus Rashford – 5
Both of United’s early goals came from Rashford’s good work down the left, although his wait for a goal or assist goes on. Direct and positive, although many of his attacks were slightly too predictable and unpolished.
Benjamin Sesko – 3
Was given a very tough task of holding up play, and both of Brighton’s goals came from passes that failed to stick at Sesko’s feet. Didn’t offer too much going forward.
Substitutes
Kobbie Mainoo – 4
Was brought into the match at a time when United were throwing away possession far too carelessly, and Mainoo got caught up in it.
Joshua Zirkzee – 3
Faced the same issues Sesko did up front. Hopelessly chasing long passes without having any real impact.
Bryan Mbeumo – 3
Was scarily anonymous after being brought on out wide. Was hardly involved in the play, although that is a symptom of the sloppy passing behind him.
Bruno Fernandes – 4
Carrick’s hail mary attempt was bringing captain Bruno Fernandes off the bench, but he failed to bring the calm, confidence or attacking threat that was needed.
Matheus Cunha – N/A
Brought on for the final 10 minutes but suffered the same as every other attacking player. No service, sloppy passes and an anonymous showing.
