It was a sight to behold as Shea Lacey scored and kissed the Manchester United badge eight minutes into his full debut.
The build-up to United's Carabao Cup game against Brighton was dominated by JJ Gabriel's request to leave the club, but as he moved closer to the exit door, Lacey took the opportunity that he had turned his nose up at.
Michael Carrick was set to include Gabriel in the squad. The 15-year-old would have become the youngest-ever United debutant if he'd been introduced from the bench, which United figures are adamant was the plan, but he watched from home as Lacey took the adulation from 80,000 fans.
A few hours after the Gabriel bombshell spread on Tuesday, Lacey posted a photo of himself arriving at Old Trafford accompanied by a love heart emoji on X. The 19-year-old is not a regular tweeter, so the timing of the post was not coincidental.
It felt like an open goal for Carrick to give Lacey a start against Brighton. The youngster has been patient, kept his head down and got himself into a position where he would be picked when the time was right, and he was rewarded.
Lacey is within his rights to have bristled at the situation with Gabriel. He is four years older than his academy peer and has dealt with the challenge of overcoming little muscle injuries to get to where he is now. No player is entitled to first-team opportunities. They must be earned.
The Liverpool-born winger has also been the talk of academy circles since he was a boy. The hype has been greater with Gabriel, who shot to fame as 'Kid Messi' on YouTube, but there has been just as much excitement at United about the player that Lacey could become if he stayed fit.
This season felt inevitable to be Lacey's breakout campaign. He made his debut against Aston Villa last season and built on that appearance with promising cameos against Brighton and Burnley, before coming on from the bench on the final day of the campaign, facing Brighton again.
Around the same time, Under-21 manager Adam Lawrence said of Lacey when speaking to the Manchester Evening News. "Shea can do things with the ball that, without getting too carried away... are genuinely first-team level," he said.
United academy coaches are level-headed when they speak about young players. They want to temper expectations, but the mask slipped when Lawrence was asked about how far Lacey could go on his journey.
Old Trafford erupted when Lacey opened the scoring against Brighton. The goal was brilliantly taken, with Lacey cutting inside to score with his left foot from the right, and there couldn't have been a more popular goalscorer following the Gabriel bombshell.
The manner of the goal wasn't a surprise to anyone who has followed Lacey closely in the academy, as cutting inside is his signature move. He has spent countless hours perfecting his technique, and opponents struggle to stop it more often than not, even when they know what he's going to do.
Gabriel's camp surely must have had a 'what if' moment when Lacey's effort found the back of the net.
Lacey is proof that there is a pathway for academy players at United. He went to Liverpool's academy as a boy, but his father insisted he join United's academy because of the club's record with young players.
The history speaks for itself. United have had a homegrown player in every matchday squad since 30 October 1937, meaning the Brighton game was the 4,367th consecutive match with an academy player involved.
Marcus Rashford, an academy graduate, was also in the starting team, while Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Amass and Tyler Fletcher were named on the bench.
The usual culprits have hammered United following Gabriel's request to leave, suggesting the state of the club is a factor in his desire to depart, but United have done everything, and more, to keep him.
Gabriel has been on an accelerated development plan, receiving unprecedented backing for a player his age. The club has made plenty of concessions under pressure from his camp, but they still felt emboldened to leave.
Lacey was brought off in the 66th minute when the score was 2-2. United went on to lose the game, increasing the pressure on Carrick. His goal was the only positive on an otherwise disappointing night.
