A disappointed Youri Tielemans blasted Manchester United for surrendering their two-goal lead against Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round.
Shea Lacey and Mason Mount scored goals in quick succession to give United a 2-0 lead within 10 minutes at Old Trafford, but Brighton scored on the stroke of half-time to set up an interesting second half. Brighton were the much better team when play resumed after the interval, scoring twice through Pascal Groß and Maxim De Cuyper.
United's collapse saw the players booed off the pitch after the final whistle. The remaining fans who stayed behind chanted "what the f****** hell was that?" as the team returned to the dressing room. Speaking to MUTV, Tielemans criticised United for surrendering a two-goal cushion.
"I thought we started so positively. Started so well. And then, yeah, we conceded a goal before half-time," he said.
"We lost our stride a little bit, where it was too much on the back foot. And then we conceded two goals in the second half and we gave away that lead, which shouldn't happen. So, yeah, it's frustrating and disappointing."
He added: "We were on the front foot, winning duels, keeping the ball in their half, and then creating chances. I thought we punished them on, they lost the ball a couple of times in the back and then we punished them.
"That's what we wanted from the game and try to push on. And unfortunately, we couldn't keep the pace up and, yeah, we got done."
When asked how the team would deal with the defeat, he said: "Regroup. I must say, we, yeah, we need to, we need to be strong together as a team. We have a massive game on Sunday, Premier League game.
"We need to get back in it, to react, and to finish positively before the break. And then, yeah, after the break, to go at it 100%."
Tielemans wore the captain's armband for the first time since joining the club, but the defeat took the gloss off the occasion. "It was a very proud moment. But, yeah, you don't get the win in the end, so it's disappointing."
United will take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday before the start of the September international break.
