Karl Darlow could find himself on the opposite side of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes when Wales face Portugal during the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Karl Darlow joined Manchester United in the summer and has enjoyed being on the same side as Fernandes since his arrival at Old Trafford. The Wales international, however, could now come up against both Bruno Fernandes and fellow United player Diogo Dalot when the two nations meet on Thursday, September 24.
The goalkeeper was included in Craig Bellamy’s Wales squad for the season’s first international break, which will last three weeks.
Darlow, who has 15 senior caps for Wales, is looking forward to the challenge of facing the Nations League holders in Lisbon.
Karl Darlow jokes about stopping Bruno Fernandes
Speaking to club media, Darlow admitted the longer international break and condensed schedule will present a different challenge.
“It’s different [the upcoming break] and I think obviously having the games in a more condensed timeframe is going to be a different challenge as well,” Darlow said.
“I think it’s a good change and it’s something I’m looking forward to.”
“I spoke to Bruno about it [the Portugal v Wales game] the other day, so it’ll be interesting! Obviously playing in Lisbon, the first one, a great challenge for us as a country. It’ll be nice to share the pitch with him on the opposite side, and we’ll see how it goes.”
Darlow is clearly hoping that his knowledge of Fernandes can work in Wales’ favour. Asked about getting the better of his United teammate, the goalkeeper offered a simple response.
“I’m trying to study his penalties!”
Karl Darlow made his debut against Brighton in the EFL Cup last night.
