Former Leeds United and record Premier League appearance maker, James Milner has revealed that Manchester United tried to sign him after he decided to leave Manchester City.
James Milner made the revelation during an appearance on The Good, The Bad And The Football podcast, which is hosted by United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt alongside Paddy McGuinness.
The former England international has played for some of the biggest clubs in English football, including Leeds, Manchester City and Liverpool. Given his history with those clubs, his response to United’s interest is unlikely to surprise United supporters.
James Milner was asked whether Manchester United had ever attempted to bring him to Old Trafford during his career. He confirmed that the club had made an approach when he was preparing to leave City.

“They did to be fair,” Milner said. “When I was leaving City, but obviously not. No, I wouldn’t have entertained it.
“I think I’d made my mind up about Liverpool. I just couldn’t. I respect the club obviously, I’m just a Leeds fan through and through and dislike them.”
Milner’s decision was therefore already made by the time United showed interest. He had committed to joining Liverpool and wasn’t prepared to reconsider that choice for a move to Old Trafford.
Milner has maintained a strong connection with Leeds throughout his career. Despite spending time at both Manchester City and Liverpool, Milner has continued to openly identify himself as a Leeds supporter.
Leeds United remains one of the fiercest rivals to Manchester United. Despite his success in the Premier League, few United fans would have liked James Milner donning the red shirt anyway.
