The Red Devils have already lost more games this season than in Carrick's interim stint last season. So who could replace Carrick if he ends up being sacked midway through the campaign? Eddie Howe: Former Newcastle United manager Howe tops the list of potential successors at 15/8. The Englishman left St James' Park during the summer after nearly five years at the helm, having ended a 70-year wait for silverware. He is also priced at 6/1 for the England national team to be his next job.
Thomas Tuchel: Tuchel is priced at 3/1 which makes the current England manager is the second favourite for the position. Before Carrick's permanent appointment, he had been strongly linked with Old Trafford, only to pen a contract extension keeping him in charge of the Three Lions through to Euro 2028.
Julian Nagelsmann: Nagelsmann is priced at 5/1 for the United role after stepping down as Germany manager following their early World Cup exit, with Jurgen Klopp replacing him. Nagelsmann claimed a Bundesliga title during his time at Bayern Munich, though left midway through his second season in 2023.
Antonio Conte: Ex-Italy head coach Conte (10/1) was touted for the United role back in 2021 before eventually taking charge at Tottenham. The Italian is a former Premier League title winner with Chelsea.
Gareth Southgate: Former England boss Gareth Southgate (14/1), who is held in high esteem by United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS hierarchy, has long been associated with the task of reviving the fallen giants, who last claimed the title under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
Kieran McKenna: McKenna is 14/1 and previously served on United's coaching staff. He remains without a club after leaving Ipswich Town following their second promotion to the Premier League under him.
Darren Fletcher: Fellow United academy coach Darren Fletcher (20/1) appeared content to carry on leading the Under-18s following his temporary spell in January, which may well account for his lengthy odds. He could, however, once again step in as caretaker manager should Carrick depart.
Carlo Ancelotti: Ancelotti (20/1) is another contender whose name emerged earlier this year before he extended his contract as Brazil manager, though the Selecao went on to disappoint at the World Cup. Nevertheless, he remains a serial trophy collector, boasting a record five Champions League victories across his stints at AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Fabian Hurzeler: Hurzeler, the architect of Brighton's stunning Old Trafford comeback on Wednesday, is priced at 25/1. The young German tactician ranks among the most thrilling prospects on the list, yet he has still to prove himself at a club the size of United.
