Manchester United were booed off the pitch after losing 3-2 against Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round. United went two goals ahead within 10 minutes, but surrendered their lead to crash out of the competition.
Carrick was hopeful for a straightforward night at Old Trafford after suffering defeat in the Manchester derby, however, he is now being scrutinised over what has gone wrong for United this season.
United have won just two of their six matches in all competitions this term. Their only wins have come against Ipswich Town in the Premier League and against Sabah in the Champions League.
United lost against Hull on the opening day of the season and dropped points against Everton, despite leading twice in that game. The Reds also failed to make their extra man advantage count against Manchester City following Phil Foden's sending off in the 23rd minute of the derby.
Brighton felt like a new low for Carrick, who was asked whether he saw enough resilience in this changing room to bounce back from the defeat during his press conference.
"I mean, a couple of smallish things end up accumulating into, let's be honest, you know, it feels bigger," he said. "I understand why you're asking the question. You know, I think if you go the Everton last-minute goal, to the City goal, to then it creates a bit of a feeling.
"And then, you know, the game today for what it is, you know, if we fully accept it, I totally take responsibility. You know, we can't put ourselves in that position after being ahead in the game and the game finishing like it did.
"So, it's kind of a couple of things have gone and then all of a sudden it becomes a greater thing from nowhere, really. So we've got to react to it, you know. We've got another game on Sunday, we've got to react to it.
"I think that's the crucial thing now is it's happened so quickly, you know, to have the feeling. It's happened quickly tonight in the game, it's happened over a period of a couple of weeks, maybe two, three weeks where there's a lot of frustration and disappointment around and we need to flip that and start winning games again."
United play Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon before the start of the September international break, and we want you to tell the Manchester Evening News whether Carrick is under pressure after the Brighton defeat.
