Manchester United have endured an underwhelming start to the season, raising concerns over Michael Carrick’s position.
United have already lost twice in the Premier League, including a home defeat to local rivals Manchester City. They have collected four points from their opening four matches.
The Red Devils were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after losing to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Man United’s most convincing performance so far came in the 4-0 win over Azerbaijani side Sabah FK in the UEFA Champions League.
Given the slow start to the season, journalist Ben Jacobs, while speaking to The United Stand, claimed that Carrick does not have the ‘universal backing’ of the club.
Jacobs also added that the Mancunian giants are doing ‘due diligence in case they have to make a change.’
United’s lacklustre form cannot be attributed only to Carrick.
The failure to sign a left-back to compete with Luke Shaw has proved costly in the opening weeks.
Man United’s new midfield signings have also not fully settled, with Andrey Santos yet to find his feet, while Carlos Baleba has not recovered from an ankle injury he suffered before his move from Brighton.
Despite those issues, Carrick needs to find a solution to United’s worrying form.
He still retains the backing of some of the hierarchy and a section of the fans, but he could come under greater pressure if there is no improvement in performances.
United face Fulham in their final game before the international break. The Cottagers held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield last time out, but are yet to win a league game.
Carrick’s position could come under further scrutiny if Man United lose at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
