Today’s rumours round-up begins with a bit of manager chat, amid ongoing discontent at Manchester United following their poor start to the new season. The Red Devils threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at home to Brighton in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week, leading some fans to call for manager Michael Carrick to be given the sack.

Football Insider claim that Liverpool are the latest side to “join the race” to sign the 27-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of this season. Chelsea and Man United are also credited with an interest in the one-cap England international.
And this is where the story all gets a little odd: some quotes from an ex-Man United chief scout follow, suggesting why the three clubs mentioned would, theoretically, like to sign Mitchell. This gives the impression that the article’s claims of “interest” are mere conjecture, rather than based on information from a reliable source.
The 3AM Verdict: Mitchell is an experienced Premier League left-back, something a lot of clubs in the division are after. We know the transfer news barrel is a little dry right now, but the publication in question here are scraping it so ferociously they’re in danger of putting a hole in the bottom. In short, we’re not convinced by this story one bit.

Rounding things off, we’re nipping up to St. James’ Park, where Newcastle United are looking to bounce back from a sobering 4-1 loss to Leeds United last weekend. The Magpies saw a number of key players leave over the summer, and the side are still arguably a player or two light despite managing to bring in some quality replacements.
According to Spanish outlet Esto es Atleti, Newcastle are among three clubs who are “very interested” in signing Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena, who was a World Cup winner with Spain over the summer. Newcastle are specifically mentioned as a club who could look to make a move in January, amid rival interest from Aston Villa and Man City.
The 3AM Verdict: Here’s the bad news: Atleti are said to have no intention of selling, and the player is believed to be happy at the club. Based on that, we can’t see anything happening in January. Flash forward to next summer, and you never know, but you’d imagine Newcastle would need to be back in the Champions League to have a decent chance of convincing the 25-year-old to join them.
