Manchester United have endured a nightmare start to the new season, suffering three defeats in their opening six games.
Their struggles have been particularly evident in the Premier League, where they have collected just four points from their first four matches and have already suffered an early Carabao Cup exit.
With several United stars struggling to find their best form, one player has emerged as a major exception.
The snippet below from DataMB shows the progress Kobbie Mainoo has already made this term.
Mainoo has seen his percentile ranking improve dramatically across almost every category.
His progressive passing has undergone the biggest leap, climbing from just the 19.7th percentile last season to an impressive 69.2nd percentile this term.
His progressive carries have also exploded, rising from the 60.7th to the 88.3rd percentile as Mainoo increasingly looks willing to carry the ball forward himself.
Impressively, his key passes have also risen from the 53rd to the 89.8th percentile, while his duel and possession winning figures have both climbed by 27 percentile points.
The sample size for judging this season is small with Mainoo playing 296 minutes but his performances have clearly caught the eye.
He is slowly becoming a beast in the middle of the park by winning duels and driving forward with the ball.
He also thrived against Manchester City despite his teammates struggling on the big occasion.
Once Mainoo gets his body between the ball and his opponent, it has become increasingly difficult to dispossess him.
His clever body feints, balance and physical strength are allowing him to shrug off challenges and emerge from situations in which he previously might have lost possession.
The United academy graduate is clearly developing perfectly under head coach Michael Carrick and that has been the only silver lining of the season so far.
