Michael Carrick has insisted he is not allowing questions over his Manchester United future to influence his thinking despite a difficult run of results.
Manchester United have failed to get the results Michael Carrick wanted in recent games, leading to questions about the short-term pressure facing the manager. Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim both had relatively short spells in charge under the club’s current ownership structure, but Carrick says that is not something occupying his mind.
“I know the club, I know the role, I know what’s expected here in terms of playing at a certain standard, playing at a certain level, achieving certain things on the pitch,” Carrick said during his press conference.
Michael Carrick refuses to think about his future
The United boss was asked directly whether the need for immediate results clashes with his longer-term plans, but he dismissed any focus on how long he might remain in the job.
“In terms of future and ownership and how long I’ve got in the job, that’s just totally not in my thinking, not one part of it.”
Michael Carrick accepts that results matter and understands the expectations placed on him by both the club’s owners and supporters.
“I understand what we need to achieve and where we need to be as a football club for the owners, what they expect, for the supporters as much as anything… there’s not [much] more important for me than what they expect and what they want to see.”
The manager admitted that the recent results have frustrated him, particularly because of his dislike of losing.
“It’s two or three games that we haven’t had certain results and two or three games too many because I really hate losing.”
However, Carrick insists the setbacks cannot be allowed to dominate the club’s thinking.
“But that doesn’t mean that the world caves in. In some minds, it does. It can’t for us because we’ve got to perform, we’ve got to get wins and we’ve got a lot of games to plan for.”
