Manchester United’s director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves is reportedly a major problem at the Old Trafford club.
He is seen as an embarrassment internally at the club, and most of the Red Devils chiefs believe he is not fit for the job.
They insist he has made Man United look like a joke in the transfer market, with the club often ending up overpaying for players above their market value.
Hargreaves was a marketing director at Adidas for six years after rising through the ranks before joining the Red Devils in June 2023.
He trained as a lawyer and was largely successful during his 14 years at Adidas.
Man United believed he would be the perfect man for the job, and he was tasked with leading their recruitment planning ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window following the exit of John Murtough.
Hargreaves was overseeing the role until Dan Ashworth’s arrival as sporting director.
He helped contribute to getting some deals over the line and had hoped to help change the Red Devils’ culture in the transfer market and implement a new strategy.
It is safe to say he has not been successful so far, given how a large chunk of the club’s recent recruitment has been largely underwhelming.
Michael Carrick’s men have started 2026-27 on a disappointing note, with only two wins to their name in six games across all competitions.
The Man United boss will be desperate to quickly turn things around, and while the club did not have an outstanding summer transfer window, the onus is on him to get his squad firing on all cylinders again.
